My green severum is the largest fish in my tank. He's still a good 3 inches shy of full grown, however. One of the things I've enjoyed most about this fish is his ever changing color. He changes constantly, to the point that I feel like I rarely see the same fish twice. Tonight, he blessed me with his "blue face" color, which is rarely seen. Just wanted to share.

Looks a little like a rotkeil severum with the blue face, but I’m aware that there are many hybrids. Maybe a hybrid of a rotkeil and green?

It’s not a rotkeil. There are multiple species, described and undescribed, that show blue faces.

If this is a Heros from a fish store and was farm bred, we call it “green” but in actuality is a hybrid of several species. This is because Heros have been bred for decades on fish farms and most have not bothered to separate them by collection location, meaning they’ve likely mixed a bunch of species over the decades. This is why “greens” in the hobby are highly variable in color, shape, and size.

good looking Earth Eaters!

That's a Green Severum, mine gets the blue face every now and then as well.

Yep. They do change colors- seemingly based on their mood. Mine goes from very dark, almost black, to it's usually green/blues. Mine is a tank. He/she's been together with my tiger oscar since they were babies. They're going on 8yrs old.
