As the title states i would like to have a planted tank, but with the senegal and going with a sand substrate is it possible to grow plants?

I grow plants in play sand -- Amazon Swords. They have grown so large that we couldn't see anything but plants in my 125 gallon tank, and we had to prune them. I'd say it's definitely possible.

I've had plants growing in play sand for 18 straight months. When I pulled out one of my amazon swords, the roots were at least 3 feet long. It works fine as long as you use plants with strong rooting qualities, or tie plants to driftwood.

Sometime you'll have to get some root tabs for pool filter sand. I dosed with them just once and my plants have blown up since.

Sand is fine. There are also several types of plants that grow attached to wood/rocks, such as Anubias, java fern, and mosses. They are all low light, easy to grow.

Ive seen those tabs before. Do you just bury them in your gravel or sand?

yes you just bury them with in a certain distance of the plant cant remember exactly, and i have some crypts growing in sand quite well i also have low light anubias and ferns on my wood and rocks

if you get root tabs you want 2 inches of sand, so they dont leech into the water.

i dont think it matters if you put them close to the plant, i put mine with in a inch of my swords. i would get the api ones, the flourish tabs are only microelement tabs
