Guyana Piraiba?

Hi I just got this new filamentosum piraiba from steve at exoticfishshop.net as a replacement for the original one which was DOA.They are both supposed to be peru piraiba but this ones snout is very short and an absolute square. The lower jaw is almost protruding further than the upper jaw. Is this normal? Could this be a capapretum? Snout damage? Hes in a quarantine tank and seems a bit darty so maybe its just snout damage. But usually when that happens it bends downwards but this one is just a square? Thanks.

It looks like the filamentosum to me, not capapretum. IDK what Guyana fila looks like but between Peru and Suriname, this one looks like Peru to me.

Hard to say much definitive about the snout. It looked squarish like you say but the photos are not friendly at conveying it. Better pics and dorsal view pics might help illustrate the point better.

He’s regained some color after being shipped, but I haven’t seen any pictures of piraiba with just a blunt snout. Even the ones with the shortest snouts have a little bit of roundedness to them. It doesnt seem like its bent either

I agree with you. Wow! That's a thoroughly abnormal, short and square snout for a piraiba.

It doesn't appear as due to an injury, so perhaps a genetic mutation, abnormality. Have you asked Steve what's up with the fish?

Haha yeah, I cant tell if I like it or not, but do you think its a mutation that would make it worth more or less? Maybe ppl like vince might like it, but either way i think im gonna get another one as I want one normal one as a frame of reference.

But yeah, I havent asked steve yet as he seems very busy with shipping during the holidays right now and cant be bothered for a picture of some of the other filamentosum he has in stock.

No it’s supposed to be from peru, but its abnormally short snout makes me question if it is the guyana that noone has really identified yet cause even compared with the short snout of brazil/peru, it has an even shorter one that is square.

I dont know if the color gives any indicator, but it changes all the time so I dont think we can identify based on that. But most likely its just a peru with an abnormal snout.

Yes, I'd propose it is a mutant.

Your photos show the tank is bare and maybe receives too much light, which would stress the catfish, hence also your observation of shifting coloration / pattern. I'd suggest to keep it in dim conditions. It shouldn't be so pale as in your 1st set of photos; the 2nd set looks better FWIW.

Yeah totally agree, I turned the light on to take better pictures but the first pic where it is really washed out and stressed was when I just got him after shipping.
