So I posted a few days ago about my motoro's eyes being cloudy. I thought it was because of him scraping them against a rock in the tank. Well, I saw him swimming mid water about 5 minutes ago and saw this massive wound! What should I do? I did a water change yesterday, as well as adding salt, and all the water levels are ideal. Could this have been caused by the shed stinger I found in the tank, or do you think he scraped it on something? Should I add some melafix? Please Help ASAP!

Bang in-between the thorax and abdomen, looks like you have got away with it this time, discarded barbs are always a risk if not removed and by the look of the wound the barb has caused this, the dark area looks like where it penetrated,if it had entered the stomach cavity the ray would be either dead already or very close to it.If the ray is still swimming and acting normal then great, you have done all you can, just keep the water pristine. The addition of melafix won't do any harm if you want to use that as well as the salt.Go easy on the feeding, this will not only help by keeping the water good but a stretched stomach won't help the healing process.
I wish you luck!
Ps yes a clean glass bottom would be benificial regarding healing, any substrate will aggravate such a wound.

I kind of thought that the substrate wouldn't help the situation. Especially since it's silica sand...

Also, do you think this could cause the cloudy eyes?

P.S.: The ray is still acting normal, has full color, and is begging for food like normal.

As long as your water is all good should heal very quickly...if he's acting normal and feeding he will recover.

I am currently completely draining the tank so I can remove the sand and will refill it with water of the same parameters when I'm done. I have the fish in a 30 gallon I keep on hand and I filled it with water from the tank along with an airstone and a heater to keep the water at temp. Moved the ray with as little stress as possible by scooting him into the five gallon aquarium I scooted him in to take the pictures above and lifting it over to the 30 gallon, where I slowly tipped it in.

I'd leave it be, moving sand can further cause stress to your ray. Keep water clean and they will heal...1 lb of salt per 100 gallons of water will helps the wound heals faster.

didn't see this until now. The sand has all been removed already... He seems to be just fine though. Fingers crossed!

At least he's in sparkly clean water now, which should help him heal and my parents are picking up melafix and more salt first thing in the morning.

Well, my parents went and got some salt, so I added 1.8 lbs of it to the tank. Hopefully that helps. I am going to pick up some melafix tomorrow since all the pet stores around me are closed and Meijer doesn't carry it.

The wound already seems to be less inflamed.
