I am an aquarium maintenance tech by trade. I have run into a big problem with a documented 31 year old pacu. I am hoping there is a pacu specialist here cause i need to ask some questions before it is too late.this pacu is just shy of 4 feet long as well....by far the largest i have seen.

well...there are so many symptoms.....his eyes have a film over them....not cloudy....but solid white...his gills a month ago were perfect...now they are jagged and white...and every where his gills touch are white as well. his scales have gone from perfectly uniform to different sizes...almost look like scabs. any flexible fin is infected at the skin. his gills have lil sacs attached to them that i know are filled with something bad. they look like little balloons. a month ago there were 7 fish in the tank. now there are 3 and the other 2 have become non moving. i spent 2 hours looking at the fish and none of the 3 moved. i am scared these sacs of fluid attached to the pacu are killing the fish.

I took over this contract from another tech. If i trust his books, the water perameters were perfect.

Perhaps run some water parms yourself? Ive personally never heard of an illness that has symptoms such as this...it is an odd case indeed. Perhaps check on the water parms...do a massive waterchange and go from there. What size tank/pond is this fish kept in?

Why did the other guy wait so long..should have been treating the tank along time ago at least with aquarium salt .. fish in this condition showed signs long ago.. please post some pics.. u need antibiotics and fast.. how big is the tank.. why did no one test the fish that died ? Obviously the other tech did not bother to help when he should have done something.. but never to late to try..but you need to give amount of gals of water etc.. cannot add any medicines unless you state the other type of fish..not all meds are safe for some fish. good luck.

THAT SOUNDS LIKE A MAJOR INFECTION. MY PACUS HAD SOMETHIC CLOSE TO THAT ONCE AFTER A DOSE OF MELAFIX . DO A MASSIVE WATER CHANGE AND RUN POLY PADS IN THE FILTER FOR ABOUT A MONTH

If not for the other fish dieing I would guess general systems failure caused by old age however...,
What it sounds like is a combination of a serious kidney infection combined with a secondary infection of the gills by either gill crustaceans of sporozoal cysts.
The Crustacean infection can be treated with either de-los and methylene blue, or any strong formalin/malachite green mix such as forma-green or clout. If it is sporozoans then there is no listed treatment though again formalin/malachite green has sometimes worked (rarely). Disecting one node (sac) will reveal either a tiny multilegged critter (crustacean) or a hollow sack of fluid (sporozoan). For the kidney infection try either erythromycin or TMP Sulfa.

never heard of anything like that...But, knoing Guppy, he's probibly right. :)

i think guppy is on the right track with this one meth blue is the way to go
