I am anticipating the time I can get some herichthys bocourti. I was wondering though, looking on google images, there are many pictures of the bocourti, however I noticed that some were a solid yellow/orange, while some had stripe/barred, and some had blotches/broken black bars. With this, I was wondering why that was the case. Is it due to collection location, that specific line, breeding coloration, age, growth food?

Here are some examples from the google images search that I found. (None of these pictures are mine or of my fish).

Lacks the black stripe or blotches on the sides.

Has the black patches/broken black stripes.

Stripes or barred.

This bocourti growth progression from buddah1200, leads me to assume that it deals with growth.

i actually had the same question. If i were to guess it would be sp. and collection point kinda like cichla. Gage has some "Golden M****) species that turns out like your 2nd pic

Basically, every bocourti I know of in the hobby originates from the same collection point--Lake Izabal in Guatemala (and rivers that feed in to it). They should all look about the same as adults, some will just turn out nicer due to genetics and will look different depending on their mood, age, and photography equipment used to take their picture.
