question about 'place to hide'
does the 'place to hide' for example bichir, pleco, (freshwater) eel, etc need to be dark, or transparent work?

there this 'pleco cave house', rocks, decorations, etc
must be dark inside, or transparent work?

They used to sell...maybe still do sell?...a transparent tube intended for use as a shelter for Black Ghost Knife Fish. The claim was that the fish is nearly blind, but relies upon its lateral line and also upon a weak electrical field to sense its surroundings. The tube apparently was supposed to give the fish a sense of security while making it easy to observe; it was claimed that the fish's senses made it believe that it was concealed.

I personally thought it was hogwash. Any fish that has eyes will at the very least be sensitive to light and dark; a retreat needs, IMHO, to be dark and not too large, to provide the sensation of being hidden and safe.

The trick is to provide these non-transparent hides, arranged in such a way that the inside can be seen and the fish can be at least partially observed while inside.
