I want to get rid of the crushed coral and start using maybe silica sand from Home Depot. Is this sand safe for this? It will be salt and a tile eel in a 40g

its very dirty, you will need to rinse the pee out of it, its also quite light. I would go with the pool filter sand rather than the sand box sand or mortar sand.

My neighbor tried this for his turtle tank, but no matter how many times u rinse it it isn't clean, it also would irritate fish and looks terrible in a fish tank

Play sand from HD is safe to us, just really dirty. It will require lots and lots of rinsing and will still cloud the water. As others have posted, PFS is much cleaner - I use it right out of the bag - although a bit coarser.

The expensive sand here is around $40-50 for 20lb.
No point in buying pfs at these prices since there's no monetary saving.....just buy aquarium sand in this case
