i heard that i could put hornwort in my out door pond and since im in socal the water never gets 50 or less degrees farinheiht so is this a good idea since it will also put oxegen in my pond

ive used hornwort in my tanks before, my experience is it doesnt do well with water fluctuation, i once had an established hornwort plant in 1 tank and when i transfered to a new tank, within the hour the "leaves" fell off completely leaving only the stem. i decided to go with anacharis its also a floating plant but more hardy.

Hornwort can be a bit fussy about changes in water parameters, but if it decides it likes your conditions it will grow nonstop. I always acclimate mine to its water slowly, just like a delicate fish.

Buy some from a pond supplier rather than an aquarium shop if possible; pond suppliers usually carry Ceratophyllum demersum, a temperate zone species, while aquarium suppliers carry C. submersum, a tropical species. C. submersum might do well too, as mild as your winters are, but C. demersum can definitely take the cold.

If you want it just for an oxygenator, go with the anacharis. It is much hardier. If you like the look of the hornwort, check local waterways to see if any is growing their. QT it first then in the pond.

ive looked in lakes around here in fl, and ive found what looks like hornwort but its completely different... ive kept 2 species before not sure which kind but 1 was a fancy version and 1 was normal. but the wild 1 found in fl is REALLY big, the gaps in between the leaves are much wider and everything, doesnt look as good but im sure its a good oxygenator too.

is hornwort a floating plant?

yeah its floating. some people put weights on it to make it like a regular plant, but thats not good cuz the part that is covered will rott.
