How big of a tank do you need?

Red bellies get about 6-8 inches. I wouldn't keep just 2. Piranhas are a schooling fish by nature and u need to keep at least 7 or more. In all actuality piranhas are very skittish and shy. If your looking for an aggressive fish go with a red devil or a few jack dempseys even an Oscar.

A Lot of aggressive fish don't do good with 2 fish! One oscar or 4 or more, same with schooling piranhas.

I had 9 7'' inch reds in a 55 and they did ok, not great but they did ok. i have 8 now in a 120, so there much better.

Imo, i say 15g per adult fish.

For piranha I'd recommend odd numbers. Three at least, 5 or more better but odd numbers. Go with the biggest tank you can afford, starting at 75/90.

I def agreew with getting as big a tank as you can afford, god i cant agree with that enough. Why do you think odd numbers? I think the more you can house but better it is, since if there is any agro its divided evenly.

i agree with the odd nums, piranhas are from the tetra family
and ive kept all sorts of tetras not piranhas but its almost like murpheys law or something,
if i had an even number of fish 1 would die,add 3 more 1 would die,
and i was like hmmmmm bein all superstious..so now any type of fish i keep its always at an odd number...
but about the tank, it goes with everythingh in life, the bigger the better

Whoa. been around a while and never heard that one before.

To the OP,
Red belly piranha have the capability of reaching lengths around 10" to 12" if cared for properly. It is true, they do tend to be very skittish especially when kept in smaller groups.
I did have success keeping a pair for a few years but they were EXTREMELY skittish and the only reason I had two was due to the fact that I couldn't afford a larger tank.
If you are concidering any piranha a 55 gallon aquarium should be the bare minimum. And even then you should be looking at members of Serrasalmus and not Pygocentrus. That being said there are a few serras that a 55 will not be large enough for. The beauty about serras is they are very slow growers. If its possible to get your hands on a 75 go for it, you'll be able to grow out some of the larger species.
If I can't keep more then 6 or 7 in a tank, then I just want it to be solitary. Otherwise, most of the time your constantly looking at damaged fish.
