how cold of temps can oscars handle??

Being that they come from SA, I wouldn't feel comfortable housing them in anything less than 75 degrees. I don't think they would be able to survive in less than 70 degree water. 82 degrees is optimal.
 
Lowest temp they can survive at is 55 F. I wouldn't suggest you try it though. Why do you ask?
 
i currently dont have a heater in the tank. it has be staying between 75-79 (F) depending on house temps. well its been getting colder out and it was about 71 this morning. just wondering what kinda of temps they can stand.
 
Ok you should be fine, but I would go out and buy a heater ASAP.
 
The fish will be ok in the low 70's but if you had a problem such as ich or somthing that required increased temp to combat you would be stuck. You can get a good stelth heater for about $30.00, a small investment with the potential for big return. If you look at all the money you invest in a tank, stand, filters, lights, covers, fish food, fish ect why would you stop short at a heater?
 
you would be surprised how cheap i have got everything.....


and well my last heater blew up, if i can get away with out running one i would like to. i do have a heater tho, just dont want to use it unless i have to.

You do have to. Its your obligation and became so the minute you brought the fish home. Just because it can survive at low temps doesn't mean its healthy, comfortable or optimal.

Save yourself the $$ in electric and just get rid of it if you cant NOT be a cheapskate and provide the fish with the appropriate temps it needs to be comfortable.

I agree

look at it this way, I could turn the heater off in my house for the winter, and I could survive but I would be miserable.

You may as well use the heater you have. Your fish will thrive better in 80 degree water
