I bought my first canister filter off Craiglist a couple of months ago. The guy assured me everything worked fine and plugged it in for me so that I could see the impeller spin.

I finally got around to filling up my new tank today and hooked the 2028 up. The guy informed me that the priming didn't always work so well so I filled up the canister with water, connected the hoses and dumped water down them as well. I plugged the filter in and could hear it humming...but no go.

I primed it a couple of times, but still nothing. I left it plugged in for a few minutes...still nothing.

I opened the pump up and everything looked okay. I plugged in the unit but noticed the impeller wasn't spinning. I took off the plastic impeller cover off and plugged it in again and the impeller spun free. When I reattached the plastic impeller cover, the impeller stopped spinning again.

I didn't receive a manual for it, so I'm just working off what I think should work. What do I need to do to get this thing working properly?? Is the impeller broken?? If so, what model do I need to purchase?

Feedback appreciated...

I never used the primer on any of my canisters, what i do its a set the canister like the way its ready to plug it on, take the strainer out, force water with a power head to the intake until i see water coming out of the spray bar attachement, then plug the canister, should work all the time, put the strainer back on.

have you lubed any of the seals on the primer? i had to do this on mine because it was locked halfway down and wouldn't let it run (i also bought mine used but for $30). Check to make sure everything is clear in the impeller shaft and in the whole it goes in to.

What concerns me is that the impeller doesn't spin when I attach it's plastic cover. If I plug the unit into the wall, shouldn't it spin freely??

BTW, I did try pumping water into the intake and did see it running out of the spray bar, so everything appeared to be full.

OK...took another look at my pump tonight and now I'm thinking the impeller is broken.

I took the cover off and quickly plugged it in. I could hear a humming, but the impeller wouldn't turn. I took the impeller cover off (what I'm pointing to in the picture below) and it still wouldn't spin. I flicked it with my finger a couple of times and it spun for about 5 seconds then stopped.

I couldn't get it to turn back on so I then slowly wiggled the impeller free and pulled it off the shaft. When I look at the magnetic housing (at least that is what I assume it is) it appears cracked all along one side. The other side also has a crack along its length, but the crack isn't as wide as the one below.

Is this broken? Would it explain the impeller not spinning properly?

I didn't receive a manual with the filter, does anyone know the correct part number and could you also recommend a good reseller?

Thanks...

That is broken, and I would imagine that interruption in the magnet might cause it to get stuck.

I'm sure it's cheap to replace but hard to find. And then when you do, don't be surprised if the filter leaks. Mine does. Those filters are notorious for leaking.

Thanks for the quick reply guys. There's actually a Big Al's store 10 minutes from my house...I'll try to pop in there tomorrow to see if they have any at the store. Glad to hear it's a fairly cheap fix!

Managed to pick up an impeller at the local store and the filter is now running fine. Thanks for the assistance!
