I have to strongly disagree with using GE windows and doors silicone. GE1 is a sealant, not an adhesive, so it has no tensile strength and will not hold the glass. If you call GE and ask abot that product for aquarium use, they will tell you it is not intended for aquarium use. There is an 800 number on the tube.
Momentive RTV108 or 103 is your best bet. It is FDA approved (does not leech at all), and has the strength to hold lass together. 108 is clear, 103 is black. RTV 108 is rated at 40lbs/sq in.
I purchase here (or wherever you find it):

People are going to use what's convenient and available. I'm just suggesting that if you're talking about holding back water - don't you want to use the best options available? I do.
