Hello there, I will be setting up a 55 gallon tank that is (maybe planted) if not; it will have tons of artificial plants.

The tank has a heater, and the filters will be an aquaclear 70 & some random filter that came with the tank in a package.

So, the question is how many cardinal tetras can I have in my tank? I would like to have as many possible.

70-80 Jumbo Cardinals with frequent water changes.

Yikes! How much do cardinals cost there on average? That's a whole lot.:jaw: Better than neons I suppose. Neons tend to drop dead lately. I once recommend a friend to try cardinals but he insisted buying both cardinals and neons to see if my warning was true. True enough, the neons dropped dead and the cardinals were still standing the next day. I prefer cardinals although they're a tad expensive on the other hand.:D

Yeaaah, I like the look of cardinals too. More color because of the full red stripe.

Im not to sure on the price, but looking on the web; cardinals are definitely more than neons. Im hoping my LFS will cut me a deal on them.

try and get a wholesale lot of cardinals from your lfs. a bag usually consist of 80-100 which will leave you with more than enough after qt-ing them. make sure to keep up with your water changes as your tank would be considered overstocked.

What percent change and how often?

petsmart usually has them for a buck. you cant try there

You sure they were cardinal tetras and not neon tetras?

I like the cardinal tetras more because the bottom red stripe extends across the whole entire body.

Thanks for the input though.

Make sure the tank is FULLY cycled and test for nitrates two to three times a week until you get a feel for it. I would do at least 25% twice a week though if you are stocking jumbos and have over 50 in there.
