Good morning mfk. In the future I am getting a 250 L tank in which I want to keep 3 African bushfish, 2 African butterfly fish and 5/6 upside down synodontis.

I would like to breed Guppy's to feed as a treat to the bush and butterfly fish once a week. (Maybe 2 a fish)
The question is how adult Guppy's should be kept to produce enough fry to feed +-10 a week?

I am thinking 2 heavily planted 60L tanks with 20 adults each with air powered filters.

Any thoughts guys?

Guppies do breed fast but you have to wait for ever for the fry to grow up large enough to be feeders. I suggest having 3 tanks set up with guppies breeding, with that after 5-6 months you should be able to feed 8-10 per week. Depending on how many fry make it you might have to add another tank. At 3 months old most guppy fry will about 1/2" long.

I know it is a lot of tanks for food but I have tried it also, growing feeders tanks time and space. In the end I decided to just have guppy tanks and feed 4-5 a month to my oscars to keep my numbers down.

I've done it before , I used a 20L loaded with semi-aquatic plants. I guess temperature was important cuz I had them at room temperature and they really didn't reproduce that much....probably shoulda been 10 degrees warmer. I ended up just using everything as feeders for my Jags/JDs/etc, then using the same 20L exactly as it was for a nursery for Jag, Jewel and Convict fry

I had like 30 in a 20 gallon and I think it was like 5 males to 25 females and let me tell you they were the messiest fish I've delt with. On top of that they bred like crazy but before I realized or had the chance to pull the fry they'd be eaten. Needless to say never again.
