I was wondering if anyone here knew how to breed minnoes? im a big time fishermen and would like to just breed them myself instead of going out to buy them everytime. any info would help..

Thanks!

What kind/size do you want? Fathead minnows (tuffies) and golden shiners are both pretty easy to raise. Also, how much space and money can you devote to this? You will probably need a fair-sized pond or two to produce enough minnows for your needs. I doubt you'll save any money this way.

A compromise solution is to set up a big tank or small pond and buy bait minnows in bulk; you can keep them alive in the tank/pond until you need them and hopefully get some savings from buying large quantities of minnows.

I fish too and they want $13 for a doz. Mediums. Outrageous. I switched to Rapala Shad Raps.
In NY, DEC has implemented a new rule in which you must have a dated receipt of purchase for your bait (worm/minnows) from your Bait & Tackle store. They claim it is to know where the baits origin is. Cross contamination is another reason. If you had a batch of sick minnows and fished a random lake you could technically introduce disease.

which ever species of minnoes grows faster i would prefer. as for space, i have a pond but my LMB is living in it if i really wanted the pond to raise minnoes i would just take him out, hes not too important to me lol. i also have a 55 gallon tank and 75 gallon tank would either of those two work?

Yeah i know not to use sick minnoes for bait so ill make sure my minnoes are fat and healty. geez $13 for a dozen thats more then a dollar a piece thats crazy!

You can raise fatheads in either aquarium, but as I said, you won't have enough production to keep you supplied with bait. You're going to need a lot of room and a lot of feed to produce large numbers of minnows, and it will take several months to get them to bait size in any case.

Another option is to raise sunfish in your pond. They are just as fertile and possibly faster-growing than minnows.

Eh if I were you Ill ditch this plan and stick with buying baitfish then save the leftover minnows in your aquarium for next time's fishing along with the newly batch of baitfish.

i use minnoes for walleye fishing mainly unless something else takes the bait. hmm maybe raise sunfish, bluegill or crappie seems to a better idea. i tried to take some shad home to my pond but they just die so darn fast.

Get a minnow trap.

What part of CO do you live in? I might be able to point you towards some great places to catch minnows yourself once it warms up a bit.

I also know of an awesome Colorado-based fishing forum if your interested.
