Hello, I purchased this fish as a Port Acara its about 3" and has killed a convict and a firemouth, now my Blue Acara is looking pretty ragged from fin nipping/being attacked. I have lots of hiding places but this thing is mean! Is it really an Acara? Kinda looks like a Dempsey to me. :irked:fishy.jpg

Actually it looks like a Blue Acara (female). Here's some recent photos of some I have which are WC and about the same size as yours.

Yes, it does! I love the blue acar that's what I really wanted, can they be aggressive? I thought they were peaceful, my aquarium is 55g btw.

mines not agressive at all. hes in a 55g with a red severum thats much bigger than him, a few barbs, and a few giant danios

I will agree with Notho that it does look like a blue acara. However, it's difficult to tell, but this may be a blue acara X green terror hybrid. It's becoming very uncommon to see pure blue acaras in the hobby because the hybrids look incredibly similar to a standard blue acara.

Pure blue acaras are definitely a pretty peaceful species (though of course with cichlids you can get an aggressive fish even in a group that is known for being peaceful). You may have lucked out and gotten a pure one instead of a hybrid.

Blue acaras are one of those swing species, you can get really mellow ones and you can get ones that should be named blue terrors. Most are fairly mellow for their size, but aggressive ones are definitely unheard of. This was long before anyone crossed them, not sure if there is a difference in aggression between the various blue acara species or not.

Up where I live, I'm fortunate to have come by WC Blue Acaras from Spencer Jack at aFISHionados here in Winnipeg. They are really feisty and aggressive when protecting their eggs and young. When not breeding, their not overly aggressive compared to other cichlids. Here's a young pair of mine guarding their eggs and you can see how they handle themselves.

Great looking acaras. Love their color. Hilarious that they laid eggs on the heater. Can't tell you how many times it's happened to me and I end up having to power it down and put a different one in the tank. LOL
