Hi! I am fairly new to keeping cichlids and purchased a Flowerhorn about a month ago. I come home today and notice that he has some open flesh wounds around his gills on one side. He is alone in the tank, other than rocks and plants. So I’m thinking that maybe he scraped himself against a rock? I wanted to post this here for your thoughts Incase this is something more serious and I’m not seeing it. Thank you in advance!

Mine scrapped him self on heater once. I would say start with adding some (aquarium, epsom) salt and may be stress guard (I use it for minor injuries) and wait for comments from others.

Maybe just a scrape. Don’t look like anything parasitic. If it’s just hanging skin then it’ll eventually fall off. Just watch for now.

I would also check your water parameters. If your water is off that can cause the fish to start rubbing himself on surfaces and getting cuts. I would take out any rocks that have sharp edges. Do that now. Its not worth your fish getting hurt.
