Hi I am brand new to the monster fish club.. but I recently bought a pleco because I thought it was a really cool looking fish and he’s only 3 or 4 inches long right now and I found out that he can grow up to be about two feet long. So I’m about to buy this 210 gallon tank and I was wondering if this will truly be large enough for him when he grows up. I also am wondering what kind of decorations I can put into the tank to make him happy because I know that they uproot plants and honestly I don’t want to deal with the whole having to redo my decorations every other day or what not.. I really like him and I don’t want to get rid of him so any and all information about owning a two foot pleco would be great help for me! Also wat are some other fish I could maybe put in with him because currently he is with one goldfish and three little live bearer type fish.. like I said I’m brand new to the monster fish game..

What type of Pleco is it?

I believe goldfish's requirements are quite different than Pleco. Unless they'll adapt, I don't think they're great tank mates.

You haven't said what what kind of pleco it is. I assume it's a common?

If so, a common with goldfish is probably doable as they are fairly adaptable fish. I would just keep a heater on it so it doesnt drop below 70. Others may have different advice though.

Do not keep common plecos with goldfish. I can't even tell you how many times I have rescued GF over the years who have had fins chewed off and holes chewed into their sides because of common plecos. Bad juju

The entire Pterygoplichthys genus can be a pain to house with some fish because they can eat the slime coat of some fish and the common pleco is by far the worst offender. I'm not saying they can't be kept together successfully but it requires that the pleco is receiving a varied diet to reach all it's needs I use cucumbers and cichlid pellets. You also have to keep a close eye to make sure nothing bad is going on even if they have been together for a long time because things can change and if you are not paying attention or don't separate them then you may end up with a dead fish

Hello; let me add that the common pleco will make copious amounts of poo. Long stringy and unsightly strings of pleco poo. I had one a bit over 14 inches for a time. I did solve the stringy poo problem. Get ready for lots of waterchanges.

From my own experience(28 years) of keeping plecos(and mostly common goldfish together). If you keep the pleco well fed, he will leave the goldfish alone. I've never had a pleco attack a goldfish. If you leave the pleco just to eat algae then yes you could have problems.

As other have said, include a picture to make sure it's a common. For all we know it could be a clown(which only gets up to 3-4 inches).
