Can anyone tell me the average growth rate of an iridescent shark? The fish at the store are about 2-3 inches, and I want to know how long I could keep one in a 30 gallon before it reaches ~7 inches. And it should be good with a 4" firemouth and 5" bristlenose pleco, right? Thanks.

they grow pretty slow since they hit a certain length then they grow fast (not sure of that length as i dont want to get beaten' up ;) ) while i had mine he was 10" and in 2weeks it was 11.5"

Hmm... So do you think it would go from 2" to 8" in 6 months? If so I probably won't bother getting one.

its not so much about the gallons of the tank more of the dimensions, if your tank is long rather then tall. ive seen ID Sharks grow better(and somewhat faster) in long tanks rather then tall. It allso has todo about water quality and diet. i would consider buying more then one cuz they are "schooling fish" found in large numbers. when i had only 1 he was very skitish. But later on i added in a channel cat around his size and he was't as scared. if you want something that has a growth rate and gets to a nice size you should get a Channel Cat. Or if you have room get an RTC. but he would get to 2" to 6" i would say in 2-5months with proper care.

I don't see the point to be putbluntly, why keep a fish you know you are going to get rid of when you can get fish you will keep for life? :) Just my $.02

I will be getting a 120 gallon, hopefully in the next 6 months, that's why I'm asking. And I don't want a fish that will fit in a 30 gallon for life, because it will probably get eaten by the ID shark. Thanks for everyone's input though, I don't think I'll be getting one since they seem to grow pretty fast.

I ment why get an ID shark when it will grow out of the tank, when you can fill the 30 with fish who can livein it for life? Just my opinion, unless you do get the 120 then I say ok go for it.

ive got 5 of these guys at 4"ers swimming around in my 30g tank, for me their kinda picky with what they eat. the LFS said they fed them floating pellets before but mine doesn't in my 100g tank. i transfered them back to my 30g tank since they cant seem to find the pellets in my 100g tank. so far ive read give the right space and food they grow 1mm a day but starts slowing down at 1 foot. theres much more data about them out since they're being grown commercially in asia. so thats like few gram fingerling to 1.5kg in 6 months.
