A type of Aequidens I'd say, diadema or one of the similar species, with diadema, metae, and (somewhat less so) sp. jenaro herrera being most common in the US. Care is similar between them and temperament is variable, depending on gender, gender mix, individuals, tankmates, etc. Not always easy to Id-- several Aequidens species are similar, the same species from different locations can vary, and (from personal experience) individuals can look different depending on mood, tankmates, or which tank you put them in. I've had people quite confidently get it wrong on ones I had with known provenance.

Kevin@TUIC Kevin@TUIC may be able to tell you species.

Thank you for the information. If it helps at all the fish is right around the 6ish inch mark.

Royal acara is just a common name for Aequidens diadema, usually sp. Jenaro Herrera from Peru, but it can depend on the seller, some label Jenaro Herrera as A. diadema 'Peru' and some call them 'red acara.' Jenaro Herrera may or may not end up classified as its own species, adults can be really beautiful. As for being peaceful, don't count on it. Some are, but some are far from it, you don't really know until they mature and this fools some people-- it can also depend on tank size and what else is in the tank. Males can get 8" or larger pretty easily. A. diadema and metae can be very similar looking, the main difference being spawning style. Jenaro Herrera tend to get plenty of red, but this can be affected by lighting, also mood and condition, so unless this is apparent I tend to be cautious on IDs.
