I learned this lesson with my bullhead catfish, but I thought that is surely wouldn't happen with goldfish, right? I put some little 3/4" babies in with some small 3" adults in a tank that I keep the goldfish in during the winter. I thought that they were too big to fit in the adult's mouths, but I started with 7, I have 5 now. Now I got to figure out what to do with them. Ha Ha, I really don't want to set up another tank. I lost a few this summer to raccoons, so I kinda want to keep a few to replace them. Probably nothing interesting to the serious fishkeepers here, just thought I'd share...

Ya goldfish can be quite mean/aggressive actually. They will definitely kill/eat tankmates.

aggressive? Every goldfish I've had has liked to eat little fish and inverts, even snails, but none has ever shown any sign of aggression that couldn't be written off as males bumping breeding females around. They are the least aggressive fish I know.

Ya poor choice of words :) I pretty much meant exactly what you said about them eating other fish ect. I meant aggressive as in fin nipping and the such. Not really aggression just hunger I suppose.

Goldfish definitely will peck/suck on each other. They can't do much with their little sucker mouths, but still...

I think most of that is them just kind of huddling together and breathing, or as I said above, the males will push breeding females around.

Nah mate, many times have I seen one goldfish swim up to another, and suck up on it, in the same way it would attempt to eat an earthworm. I don't know if anyone else has observed this behavior, but it doesn't resemble that breathing, huddling, or spawning.
