I am seriously thinking of trying to import a Flowerhorn from thailand, buying via aquabid, as the fish available to me in the UK are pretty poor really, and hugely overpriced.
I have never done anything like this in the past, and simply am not aware of the pitfalls. It seems that the fish would have to be sent via a "trans-shipper" nearer me. Are the survival rates very good for the shipping of fish this way ? Am I playing with fire ?
Anyone done anything similar ? Any advice etc ?

Hey there,

I made a thread about my experience on here week ago , heres linky!

http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=365121

Im expected to receive the Srt breeders next Saturday but this was after a 4month wait(Ordered and paid for in June) due to nobody being able to tranship over to the Uk.

Something im concerned about, is
the drastic change in wheather temperature since in Thailand it will be lowest 24oC and in Uk could be as low as 2oC next week! Ive read a thread on here about a Srt being frozen due to being sent in November ... so Iam pretty worried for them.

Oh .. about cost .. I had a german transhipper quote me for tranship from Thailand to Germany then to Uk which was about 180pounds and direct 24hr air freight from Thailand to Uk was 262pounds being the cheapest. (Airport to Airport)

Im currently awaiting rainnybettas tranship quote ... but he said its not as expensive as the German transhipper and also offers DOA but no refund for tranship cost.

Will let ya know if they arrive ok :)

Blimey. Just read your thread too ! Not sure that I could cope with all the stress. Seems like only the Yanks get easy FH imports from the far east.

Really hoping your fish arrive OK !!! Will be waiting to hear.

Sick08 has gone through hell with those SRT trying to arrange a transhipper.
Importing a fish from Thailand is just as easy as using Ebay. If your ordering in the winter you really need the fastest most direct shipping you can get, otherwise the fish could freeze. Also be sure no storms are blowing in that would affect any kind of travel. Make sure its from a reputable breeders as well. Chon on Aquabid is great. Great fish at a great price. But the transhipping will be your pain in the ass.

Hey m8,

Which transhipper was that?

My aquabid seller has found a transhipper set for this Friday so maybe
you could purchase through your aquabid seller and use rainnybettas transhipper? Hes also a betta fish supplier, has website, forum, aquabid etc

Just got the tranship quotes in :

Before 10am next day 250Pnds
Before Noon next day 240Pnds
Before 6pm next day 206Pnds

2 day shipping before Noon 161Pnds
2 day shipping before 6pm 122Pnds

I went with the quickest and dearest option so the Srts dont have to suffer as much especially with the cold wheather.

The transhipper printed of the screen of the rates which was helpful and he charges 50euro which is inc in the above cost which is not bad.

Cheers!

The trans-shippepr I contacted was Joachim Menz in Germany (eivi_99@yahoo.de), who say's he only does Bettas.

Looking at the prices you have stated, it looks like the whole thing would have been way too expensive for me anyway. I only really want another FH for a wet pet, not to breed or show or anything like that. I was hoping for a really nice looking one, but it looks like that will be out of my reach financially.

I ended up buying a bit of an oddball little FH from my LFS for £25. He's a great character though, very confident and very tame ... just what I'm looking for. He's mid-fade at the moment so I have no idea what he will end up looking like, but he'll do for me !!!

ahh ... I also contacted that transhipper a wee while ago and he said same thing to me :)

Congrats on the purchase! Any chance of pics to see what he/she looks like?

Yeah the tranship costs from Germany are wayyyyyyyyy more expensive than if it was a Uk transhipper.Just to give you an idea i know of a Uk transhipper called Dani who has a tranship comming up in February next year and the actual tranship cost is only 50 quid!!! Compare that to my 250 LOL

hmm .. dont wanna think about that too much .. may end up changing my mind ;)

Thought i pop that bit of info in for ya if you end up changing your mind and wanting a top class stunner.

Yeah, I'll be trying to take some pics later this afternoon, when the water clears a bit after the water change I just did.

Thanks for all the info on trans-shipping !

Not many things make me wish I lived in the States, but trying to obtain really good quality FH's certainly makes me feel envious of the relative ease one can get them over there.
