i got two female rays a couple of weeks ago as i wanted something to grow on .

the rays are pearl x motoro and i was thinking of getting a male at a later date to go with the famales but since there seem to be hardly any of this type available i wondered if it would be a good idea to get a male from the same batch and grow on at the same time as the females.

i understand some of the asian breeders inbreed rays a bit and inbreeding is nothing new in fish, dogs, or other species for that matter.

whats your thoughts . ideally, if there were a male from another batch available i woudl go for that. but there isnt one available and its not likley for a while.

thanks.

Personally I would find/get new blood. Look around you will find something. To bad your over
there, quite a few in the states.

separate blood line, without a doubt.
why would you want to increase the chance of having an unhealty pup, when there are many other more suitable males around. (Y)

sure if its impossible to get another male, do what you gotta do.

my 2cents.

Yes these are already corssed, but isnt the question about interbreeding (mating sons with moms) etc.

Exactly! The male is from the same batch of pups as the females.

then get a different type of male. it dosent have to be the same type to breed. add some variety to the mix. maybe get a nice marble or something

The rays are already crosses. Does anyone seriously think that breeding them is going to cause an issue?

thats a good point. i think i would be more concerned if they wernt crossed.

for the time it will take for them to grow im sure there will be other oppertunities . growing him on with the two females and swapping him at a later date might be a better option.

I spoke to a breeder recently and he said that he knew of no problems breeding from a first generation of brothers and sisters but stops at that as a rule but for no real reason.

I know we have moral, ethical and health issues as humans and for very good reasons...but in the Amazon I am pretty sure males will breed with their daughters, mums and sisters.

African Cichlids do this all the time and you have got to do some serious inbreeding before a deformity occurs...nature kind of sorts itself out.

yes in the wild nature does sort itself out but we took them out of that and now we are in control and there is nothing natural about that. its nice to have good quality rays and not so much of imbred. we choose now basically who mates and who dosent. i say not to imbreed cause then we have an imbred from these two and another imbred from those two and then its all once massive imbreeding project. thats why so many people like to bring in wilds occasionallly cause they are mainly free of that, and to bring in diversity. ya they might imbreed in the amazon very slim chance though as its so much bigger and diverse than our tanks. so lets keep quality and not so much on the quantity just to produce some pups. there are lots of nice rays over there to get those girls so i say go find a male that you really like. it dosent have to be now take your time and dont rush things. thats just my 2 cents though
