Intelligent Freshwater Fish Stocking Calculator

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Good post labenator.

I've used this calculator before to get ball park figures on filtration capacity. It works functions based on advertised filtration capacities, which are a bit skewed. Hence, I used MFK-intuition in conjuntion with this particular calculator. I recommend hobbyists use that site's calculator, but again keep the products in perspective.

On a lighter note, it is a lot of fun try different combinations of filters on medium sized tanks with large cichlids. In this sense, it's a great learning tool. The calculator does have good cichlid information.

This is excellent, open-minded, but honest feedback. Thank you.

Thank you labenator. I did make an error though. I misunderstood the FAQ given to us on aqadvisor.com. It turns out the system uses, internally, 65% of the filtration capacity posted on those labels. It turns out the site may be more helpful than I previously assumed. This is great news for budding hobbyists.

I am considering proposing that site's calculator be embedded into MFK. It has the warnings on RTCs, Dovii's, and small fish with larger fish that we are always sharing with new members who want to house larger fish in smaller tanks.

Thanx. I have been on that page for well over an hour now.

its a good tool but I've encountered a few problems.
althought it is unadvisable to keep fish from different lakes with eachother or other cichlids lots of people (inlcluding myself) get it to work just fine. According to this my C. Cauruleus should've killed all my stock long ago when in reality its the most peaceful fish in my tank.

another problem is it seems to allow the most amazing room for each fish, now I know MFK members can be nazi's about fish needing certain sized tanks or being "overstocked" but I fail to believe a 3 foot wide 225 gallon tank could only house 4 medium-low aggression cichlids.
lets also take into consideration a lot of members have stocking that shifts and changes over the months or are growing fish out for another tank etc.

besides that the filtration calculator is really damn useful, infact if you typed in your whole stock it would be a good way to get accurate filtration for you system.
