you can put them in a 10 gal intill they are 4 inch....A QT TANK. if you keep any fish that grows over a foot long that grows 3', your not lucky, it means that your takeing good care of your fish.
 
You can't keep an ID shark in a 10 for long. I say a few months but thats it. You could house him in a 55 and up!
 
They're very active and grow at a pretty fast rate. Mine were growing about 3/4" per month. I read the article and the person said they bought a 10g not knowing the potential size, but it was fine for the time being, probably because they were small.
 
Mine is 26", he has grown in stages. I have had him for 16 years. He got a new 200 gallon pond a year and a half ago. He grew 3 inches and filled out a bit. I kept him in a 100 gallon for too long. He was by himself due his size. They will hurt themselves in small tanks. They are known to freak out and bang into the glass.
 
Probably around the 2' range. But they can max at 4' in the wild.
