Hello! I am new to the community and am also new to keeping fish. My friend and fellow MFK member encouraged me to keep a tank. So, I have been taking care of my 7 cichlids for several months now. I have one fish who disappeared a few days ago. I feared the worse and thought he was dead, but found him and he seemed to be fine. He has always been a "quiet" one. Today, I cam home and noticed that he was at the top of the tank and has a very large belly. I know that cichlids are mouth brooders, but do they birth them from their bellies first? He (she?) has not eaten and is just hanging out at the top in the same spot. If she is prego's, what should I do next? Thanks all!!

Hanging out at the top of the tank in the same spot is not normal. They usually do this before they die. My Mbuna typically get fat before they lay eggs. About a week before the cichlids vent swells their belly typically gets large.

Not all cichlids are mouth brooders (in fact, most aren't). No cichlids can be "pregnant," they all lay eggs in some form that need to be fertilized by a male.

It sounds like your fish may have a disease called Bloat.

if you a pic could you post it on up... bloat usually doesnt mean theyll hang around the top of the tank but he/she will have raised scales.
im assuming you have malawi cichlids. there belly wil be alil bigger if pregnant but when i bred mine afew months back i noticed that they wud hide for days on end. they wer allways active
