I plan on using peace lily for added filtration with only roots emersed , I also have omnivorous fish ,so my question is :

Since peace lilly is toxic if ingested by mammals are its roots also toxic to fish if ingested?

From what I have read the peace lilly fluids are able to prevent the calcium in blood from being used in mammals, as far as I know.

If I don't get an answer I'll test it on a few feeder fish and see how they do within a month after ingestion.

My local pet store has a large freashwater community tank set up for years with a peace lily hanging on the side in a basket so only the roots are in the tank. Biggest fish is an angel in this tank.

The sap contains oxalate crystals which can cut the membranous tissue of the mouth, throat, and G.I. system, as well as irritate the skin. That being said, the peace lilly is often used as a topper in a "Betta Fish Vase." see link for a graphic understanding (http://www.****************/information/betta_fish_vase.htm) I personally wouldn't want to do it. Grab some mangrove shoots, it'll pull more nitrates.

I have used google to try and answer this question but it mainly seems to not be toxic to fish from contact, and not toxic to carnivorous fish, because they wouldn't routinely munch and consume the roots in the way an omnivorous fish or herbivorous fish in my opinion yet I still haven't found definative proof that it isn't toxic by consumption to all fish.

I have some in my tank for a short while now, no deaths so far.

Cool but Iam going to still feed some feeders parts of the plant and see what happens after a month just to calm my nerves.

Ok so that plant can be toxic, ill just keep the plant out of the way of the fish and make sure sap doesn't bleed into the water.

Thanks for that link Steven.

I've had two in my riparium in with some silver dollars for over 6 months. They eat the roots all the time and they're still alive.
