Hello - just today I brought home a Boulengerella maculata/mosaic gar with what I thought was a bite on the tail. However upon further inspection there is some rot on the fin and I am concerned about an infection. I have on hand a general bacterial infection remedy made by Imagitarium and some Metroplex. This is a new tank setup.

Looks like it was bitten and became infected. Looks like a fungal infection to me.

I would suggest a thorough cleaning of the tank and set it up as a hospital tank. The Bacteria build up is visible with the foggy water. Place fish in a separate bowl with same tank water. Clean thoroughly with same tank water. Scrubbing all items, including inner glass. Change water a few times over and treat the final water change. insert fish and start care treatments.

Unfortunately the mosaic gar died in the night. I had him less than 12 hours. I'm very sad about it because I was looking forward to having one for some time but I really should have inspected him closer and used a quarantine tank. That was my mistake.

So far I have added 12.5 tablespoons of salt to the 38 gallons as well as API quick start and Imagitarium bacterial infection remedy. I would really like to prevent any other losses now that I have stupidly introduced bacteria into my aquarium.

As a side note the cloudiness is from Seachem fluorite clay substrate. We rinsed it for a long time but there is still a bit of cloudiness to the water.

That’s unfortunate. Sorry for the loss.

Sorry that the fish didn’t make. That is a learning process in fish keeping. You did mentioned that it’s a new tank setup. When I set up a new tank, I use about all used water from a healthy tank or at least 3/4 old water. If you do use any new water, you need to put in the new water first in the tank and condition it before the old water. You don’t want to kill any of the good bacteria in the old water. Adding use media in the filter will help too. You want have cycled water in the tank. The old water that is from a healthy tank should have the proper parameters or adjusted before adding fishes. I never have problems that way even with fishes I shipped in from online. The key is water quality and temperature. Also you don’t want an unfriendly environment for the new fish because of existing fishes. That will create stress. Good luck with your future fishes.
