I bought this wild caught Polypterus lapradei, can anyone verify whether or not it's 'koliba'?

What are the stipulations that differentiate 'koliba' from regular laps?

TIA

hmm...don't think so. should be a Nigerian lap. nice patterns...

basically pattern-wise, Koliba resemble the guinea laps more so than the regular nigerian laps, but there are differences. one thing toyin mentioned to me that his supplier told him is that the Koliba has that white/light stripe that runs almost the length of the body. not to say that every lap-like bichir with that characteristic is a Koliba or vice versa, at least i wouldn't rely only on that characteristic, seeing how much variation there is with lapradei.

edit: how big is it? do you know where its imported from?

It's about 7-8" appx. I'm not sure where it was imported from, I might be able to find out though.

So regular everyday laps are Nigerian? Do I have that right?

yes. whenever i see the import location mentioned for regular laps, its always Nigeria. so thats typically where the regular laps are imported from.

I just got an answer and they were imported from Nigeria. :)

Wow, this single polypterus purchase has helped me learn more about wild poly's/importing/regional variants/ etc.. than any other. This is a great learning experience. :headbang2

I have to buy another one I really like the quality of this poly! :D

Are these lapradei from Frank? I would want one too but the problem is that these get 24" or more.

Yes it is from Frank, and if you live in SoCal and want to buy polys, I can't recommend him enough. :headbang2

He has great prices (considering how big some of the polys are) and quality wild caught stock.
:)

I hope you can get a big enough tank and purchase laps.

He has the following available:

Lapradei

Congicus

Weeksii

Polli

and Endli

I don't see a Delhezi on your list.:) Brian at Ocean Blue in OC has some small one. I just sold a Delhezi yesterday for $10. Yes, I've got bichirs from Frank before. I got a polli, endi, and weeksii from him. They were a bit skittish at first but now they're swimming to the food to eat.

My current stock is 2 del, 1 polli, 1 weeksi, 2 endi. Do you think I can squeeze a lapradei in there? I have a 60x20x24 size tank.
