Hi all, i have 2 small jaguar cichlids, im asuming they are male and female because of there behaviour towards each other and the fact 1 looks alot diff to the other. Atm they are both hovering around a chunk of slate on the bottom of the tank, sucking it and moveing gravel about.

as soon as 1 of my other fish swim next to them they chase them and get a bit nasty, they are also rubbing against each other and acting/looking like they are trying to breed.

All suggestions are welcome, Thanks in advance guys

it sounds like breeding behaviour, other things you can look for are them rubing on a rock/piece if bogwood or even glass, breeding tubes out, lip locking between pair, male showing off to female.

if you want to trigger a spawn you could do a 50% water change and fill the tank up colder then you normally would then let the heater's bring temp up to usual.

keep us posted

sounds like breeding behavior...do a large water change and that should do the trick

they are rubbing against a bit of slate and shifting gravel but as i am movein soon i will have to disturb them and let them pick up where they left off ;)

they will have all the fresh water they will need then also. Thanks for the advice guys

what are they in with? they will cause mass destruction if your not careful

sure he got tsn rtc crayfish, fire eel

exactly what mark said i also got a fontosa, the tank is 8x2x2 so cant really see it being a prob as they are still only little atm, i think they are just going through the motions as i dont even think they are mature enough yet.

could be wrong but i have faith in them to play nice :headbang2

ok guys my jags have had lots of babys, i didnt even know and went to move the slate they were hideing behind and out popped lots of tiny babys and i mean lots, they are busy trying to put them all back in their little home.

a few questions, how long do they take to grow big enough to move and should i move them or just let them get on with it and see how many survive.

this is my 1st pair of jags i have ever owned and to get them breeding straight away is amazing, all hints and tips are welcome guys to help these little fellows survive.

i will try get some pics soon but they are really small and at the back of the tank.

heres a small vid of them all, sorry about the crappy quality i done it with my phone but look closely and you will see

the more they breed the slower they will grow. cut his wee wee off.
