I am looking to get into Jewel cichlids. I realize there are a few species. I am slightly confused on the id of some. Is there a site or someone here able to post some photos to tell the difference between some of the common species.

I see turquoise and also noticed that some sites post as red. I see the difference but they get labeled bimaculatus which I thought had three spots and not two. Thanks

There are 2 species that are commonly mislabled as one another. Bimaculatus has 3 spot while lifalili has only 2 spots. The turquoise are technically a color morph of the Bimaculatus, so not their own specie. I'll post a couple pics of the 2 common species.

Here is a recent MFK thread on exsul. As the op points out, they are rift lake cichlids unlike most hemichromis.

Btw, H. bimaculatus is pretty rare in the hobby. Most sold as such are actually H. guttatus. Last I heard, it was still unknown if the turquoise was a line bred or hybrid of H. guttatus.
