I recently (as in within the last week or two) bought a really great kirin parrot from pet zone. The fish is a greenish color, but I've noticed that it has subtle darker vertical bars. These resemble stress bars on flowerhorns, but they also look a lot like juvenile blood parrot markings. This fish is pretty young, I think around two inches.

Is there any way to tell the difference between the two?

Show us some pictures. The bars show up when they're sleeping, sudden light change, stress is the big one and of course when they are breeding.

Here's my bonsai Flowerhorn a little different than yours since yours is more parrot.

Those bars are from breeding you can see her papilla swollen and dropped

Keep in mind that this light seems to make my fish look super washed out. I really wish I knew what kind it was so I could avoid buying it.

You just bought it and it's probably stressed that's normal. Keep lights off for a while

Oh great, thanks for the help! There doesn't seem to be much fighting in the tank, so I wasn't sure about the reason. Hopefully he'll settle soon.

Happens to a lot of fish especially parrots and it has tons of parrot in it lol
It does seem that way! It has a working mouth though which I think is pretty sweet even if it's not considered all that desirable. Hopefully it doesn't manifest enough aggression for that to be an issue. Though I think most of its tankmates could handle it.

What are his/her tank mates?

It has the beak of a face it's different than a bonsai Flowerhorn. They look very similar though but mouth is dead give away
