Hi guys,

Yesterday I made a spray bar using a PVC pipe and used Krylon Fusion to paint it black. How many coats do you guys recommend using on the spray bar and in between how many minutes/hours in re-coating (if needed)? It's been about 19 hours since I first painted the PVC. I also just realized that I didn't sand it down prior to spray painting. Do you think that would cause the paint to chip/flake off? I'm planning on letting it cure for about a week. Probably won't put it on water until next Monday/Tuesday.

Thanks in advanced.

When I did mine I did not sand/prep the pvc at all. I followed whatever the directions on the can said for dry time and reapplication times and waited the full cure time plus some. How many coats you apply is up to you. it covers pretty nicely. I have two 1-1/4" King of DIY double U overflows and used one entire can on them. A lot of people have found the paint chips if you prep or not. I did not prep and just from fish picking at them there are little white dots showing through now.

Thanks, Red.

Not sure if it would make a difference but I guess I'll try to sand (or wet sand) it a bit before applying a second coating. And cross my fingers that it would last at least over a year without chipping lol.

Good luck! My chips showed literally the next day. I guess in the future when I make these again I will scuff them with something really coarse and hope for the best. I think the key may be to get rid of the shiny from the mold process. I also thought about using silicone and sand to cover them. Who knows. Let us know if you have better luck.

I sanded my PVC but did only 1 coat. It chipped. Some members here swear that if you apply 3-4 coats, it won't chip. Why not just buy black PVC, readily available online esp up to 1 1/4" pipes.

I've had mixed results with mine. Some of my PVC didn't flake, some did. I couldn't find any reason behind why some held and others didn't as I treated it all the same. I assumed it was some of the PVC was greasy or dirty and I didn't clean it first.

I did 4 or 5 coats on mine just to make sure it was properly covered.

Why not use black abs pipe? I think it's cheaper than PVC and fusion is pretty pricey, if I'm not mistaken. I don't know, just an idea? Lol. I've never had luck painting PVC, always falls off no matter what, maybe sand it, add a self etching primer?

I tried the fusion on mine as well but after hearing all the chipping stories I ordered some black pvc from reef supply

Well, wish me luck. :D I just did 5 coats on mine. Hopefully it'll be fully cured by Monday but I may wait until Wednesday to make it a full 7 days cure time. I'm more worried that it would kill my fish than chipping tbh. I'll post updates once I have it in my tank.

And if it chips...glad to know there's black PVC pipes. Hindsight is a ***** lol. I went to Lowes and Home Depot but both didn't have black PVC so I didn't even think of checking online if it's available. Guess that would be my fallback if it my painted spray bar flakes off.
