This is an example how I never put the knowledge in my head into good use. People who are beginning their reptile ventures, please apply whatever you've learnt from proper care articles. So to the point, I've two tremper albino's with a bacterial eye infection. Their eyes are closed most of the time, and open only when I get some saline in as base treatment. Unfortunately, the antibiotic eye drops have gone missing and the only reliable vet is apparently too busy to reply my constant reminders. I intend to use novaflox (a brand) eye drops, which were prescribe before. So this has happened twice now. Anyone has any ideas what could have cause such an infection? Please assume any captive conditions to fit in the possibilities. They are in plastic containers with ten gallons worth of floor space, paper towels, using larger cleaned bottle caps for their food and water bowls. No calcium or multivitamin (Yea, I know its crap). Mealworms.

Most geckos get eye infections from getting sand, or debris in their eyes but since you use paper towels you shouldn't be having that problem. With my experience I would say just keep the eyes clean with de-chlorinated water until you can get your eye drops, or try a vet supply store or an online store. It is a possibility that they could have gotten bacteria from the mealworms if that is all you give them, but I am still a little doubtful that it would effect their eyes. Keep changing the towels in the cage twice a week and make sure they have clean water and you should be ok.

I tend to change them daily but there are exceptions when I don't for perhaps a week (I know, its crap again). Thanks for your advice! Come'on MFkers, this one waits.

Stop at a pet store and pick up a bottle of Zoo Med Turtle Eye Drops. It will help clear up the infection. Even though it's made for turtles it works just fine on other reptiles. I always keep a bottle of it around just in case.

Thanks for the fresh advice. What dosages would you recommend for a leo geck? I should use this independently from other eye drops correct?

There is something I dont get, have you run out of suplements for your leos or you never used them? They are hardly crap and they can make a woule world of diference for your animals. Without them I would too face much more health problems with my animals then I do. If that is your case buy zoomed´s reptivite and start using it. Allot of reptile eye problems are caused by lack of nutrients. And make shure you guttload your mealworms before using them.

Was waiting for your reply in particular, coura. What I meant by crap was my absolute lack of attempts of getting calcium and multivit, because I ran out of supplies. I will be getting some soon. No excuses for myself, but it may be good for you guys to know that my country has hardly any place for supplementation. My bad entirely.

i have used these probably half a dozen times for my turtles, they actually work. it took a week or so to take effect, but it works nicely.

I had similar problems with leopard gecko's in the past they often get small debre/skin in their eyes when shedding leading to infections, at this time you should watch them and help them remove it all if necessary. Also they can tend to rub their heads from time to time on decor in the tank and even when eating certain foods (meal worms for me) that lead to them getting eye infections. the turtle drops work well as a substitute hope this helps.
