Decided to start this post cus I finally got to go to this petstore that I had heard so much about called House of Tropicals. Inventory was great but the store was a big let down. I thought I'd share my experiences with different LFS i've been to so people can add and read before they drive long distances just to be disappointed.

House of Tropicals (Maryland)- Huge store, huge inventory, huge staff, limited service and knowledge. There were a million employees in the store and no one bothered to ask if we needed help. Finally had to ask and guy acted like I was incoveniencing him. I don't consider myself and expert, but like most die hard hobbyist, you ask above average questions. The guy didn't seem to be able to answer anything, I got so fustrated I had to fire him and ask someone else for help. The next guy i asked wasn't any better. Didn't know that Central and South American Cichlids were different categories. Thought Gymnogeophagus and Geophagus all get over 10 inches, and wouldn't bother to look up prices of fish that didn't have tags. The prices are iffy too. Some things were cheap, some weren't. Quality of fish was good tho and they have rare and hard to find fish. Don't think I'd go back tho.

Tropical Fish World (Gaithersburg, MD)- Nice selection and friendly knowlegeble staff tho some employees will talk rather that ask you for assistance. I've only been there a few time but they've been extra clean and healthy fish, to dirty and dying fish on different times I've been there. They have nice selection of cichlids and I guess thats why I like them, plus they have a 800 gallon monster central american display. Will go back.

Animal Jungle (Va Beach)- Best fish store I've ever been to. The place used to be like an old Kmart or something. Huge selection of fish and they have a wild cat and monkey they keep in display room. They always have large variety of fish, sales, and plants. Have a indoor pond thats 1000s of gallons and a huge FW stingray. Huge selection of rainbowfish which I like. Downside is you have to take a number to be helped but its worth it. I also heard the manager rents a uhaul or something and drives down to florida to personally pick out his inventory. I was like a kid in a candy shop when i go. If ever you're area, you must check them out.

Noah's Pets (Fredericksburg, VA)- Not a large selection of fish but ok. Everytime I go there they seem to get worse as far as quality and selection. They just built a new Petsmart nearby which has stolen their business I guess. May go back by chance I guess.

Azelea Petstore (Richmond, VA)- For Richmond he's got the hookup on exotic fish. If you don't already know, the owner is a sarcastic jerk. But the more you get to know him, he's not that bad and he will help you out. I've learned alot about fish keeping from him. His prices and sometimes be on the high side but sometimes you can get great deals. He sold me some clown killifish fry for $1.92 just other day. His specialty would be discus tho and he's also started to get a good supply of stingrays tho they are terribly overpriced. When I first started going there, told myself I'd never go back, now I go at least once a week.

Petclub (Richmond, VA)- Ok, guy who works there is like the son of the manager and sells me rocks and driftwood dirt cheap. He has this I don't Give a F#$% mentality. I like it. Fish are ok tho, nothing special, tho every now and then they'll get something nice in.

Lakeside Petstore (Richmond, VA)- Nice petstore but their fish suuuuuuuck. Tanks are always full of ich and algae. Took my girl there over weekend and this tank was all green, it was actually a fish in there. Had a look on his face like "save me". In all fairness tho, they are a good petstore and can order you good fish and plants, they just specialize in other things cus Richmond isnt a big market for exotic fish.

Perfect Pets (Richmond, VA)- Ok, but nothing special. I always get fish cheaper than what they are by playing dumb on what type of fish it is. Got some panda cories for $2.49 cuz i told this inexperienced staff that they were probably regular cories. Saved tons of money using this trick.

Anywayz, this is my experience. Feel free to share your cuz it may help someone out.

I've overall had good experiences with the stock, variety and prices at HOT. Most of the employees are below average, but I've had great experiences with one lady in the reptile department. I will go back as they sometimes carry stock that I'm pressed to find anywhere else in the area.

Exotic Aquatics (Towson-ish, MD)- Its a great store with extremely healthy fish and employees that know enough to satisfy most questions of a knowledgeable hobbyist. Some of the younger and specifically female employees seemed to get the job for looks or through a connection rather than knowledge and skills. I've seen them take scores of minutes trying to catch a fish for me, but they tend to ask the more expereinced employees for answers to questions that they cannot answer. The stock of the store seems monotonous at times, but they often have some uncommon finds that one would have to special order from a breeder. Some of the owners/managers can be pretty rude and unaccessable, but I suppose that's a price you pay for knowledge, fair prices, and good healthy stock. I frequent this store.

The Aquarium Depot (Randallstown, MD)- This store has so much potential: many smart employees, huge livestock section, and many uncommon finds including a very large cichlid department. The Depot is not without its downfalls though. The tanks can get fairly dirty, and while fairly well maintained common community fish are held, the cichlids are always in awful condition: tatterred fins, ick, sunken bellys, and too dull or dark coloration. Prices can also get fairly high at the store. One of my initial purchases there over a year ago was a metraclima greshakei which i was told was a red aulonocara by an employee. Ultimately, I go there out of curiousity every now and again to see the nice display tanks or if anythings gotten better there, but I'm constantly disappointed.

House of Tropicals imo is not that great... Exotic Aquatics however, I like this store. They do get some nice stuff in. Aquarium Depot had a huge IT in a pond in the back of the store that I was thinkin about buying for 300 bucks a while back. The owner said he didn't really wanna sell it and I couldn't get a great view of it so I passed. Tanks are dirty and fins are ripped up but they do have an ok selection of fish.

Up in the Philly area, the lfs scene is not what it used to be but there are a few good places to visit.Giant Aquarium in south Philly is an awesome place,it has a square shaped pond cut into the floor that houses some of the biggest koi I have ever seen, there are also a few four foot arapaima in the pond. Most of the fish in the store are for the Asian hobbyist I guess as they have an overabundance of flowerhorns, parrot cichlids and goldfish. Then we have MonsterPets, think petsmart with a good selection and good prices. They have the cleanest feeder tanks I have ever seenLOL.We also have a PetsPlus store in the city.A few years ago this store moved out of the space it occupied in a strip mall and built their own stand alone building right in the shopping center.I used to work in the smaller place and learned a great deal back then, the new place is bigger but it now sucks anymore fishwise. The Hidden Reef started out as a boutique type store with the dry goods on the ground level and the fishroom in the entire basement but it burned down and reopened in another county. It is now in a huge stand alone building with good prices on dry goods and supplies.WorldWide Aquarium in Upper Darby Pa.is still my favorite as it is an older stand alone building with its own parking lot and they still have the best selection of oddballs and cichlids even though one of the former employees up and bought the place from the previous owners.

They must really be El Sucko.LOL.

Krich.., you know I've been to Philly several times and never noticed a fish store out there. Maybe I just wasn't paying attention. I travel alot and will try to check out pet store in different cities. Though I didn't go to any, I put in a local search of petstores in my gps a few week ago when I was in Miami and there were like 10 fish stores in a 10 mile radius.

Think Imma have to check out Exotic Aquatics next time I go up to Maryland.

I was in the Miami area just about a year ago to attend a wedding so I wasnt able to visit any shops but it seemed as though you couldnt drive five miles before having to pay some kind of toll.
