Marineland 350 Magnum Vs Aquaclear 110

I was looking to add another Aquaclear 110 to my 150G Oscar tank, while browsing at Petsmart, saw the Magnum 350 on closeout for $100. Which was the same price as the HOB 110. So on impulse I went with the Magnum, which was normally $160, and bought some bio media to put in place of the carbon.

Installed it today, and it was much more work than the HOB, cleaning and maintenance will also be more work... the question is, Am I getting better filtration for my time and effort? Or should I have stuck with my original plan of the Aquaclear?

Looking for opinions...

TIA.

I have a magnum 350 and it's a PITA to clean compared to my ac's. The ac110 actually has a higher gph pump and more room for media so I would just exchange the 350

I would think the actual filtration "ability" is probably similar,,,I like my ac 110's a bunch..

I used to have Magnum 350s before and they really sucked! X2 on the PITA to clean. For the quality and ease, I would take an AC 110 any day. I don't have a 110, but I do have 2X 70, 1X 50 & 1X 30 all of which do a great job keeping my various tanks clean. My Aquatop CF400-UV was just about $100 and it is way easier maintenance then a Magnum.

Ya the 110 would have been the way to go but you have what you have. The magnum is more work but give it a chance.

I find myself talking bad about these filters constantly (magnum 350). I hate these things so much. The build quality is terrible. If you feel the plastic housing you can easily see that it wouldn't take much to break it, which I've done. These things suck, they are very hard to prime and require a lot of cleaning due to the crappy build concept. I'm not saying return it and not to use it, just know these filters suck.

AC110 hands down, hate fluvial canisters but the HoB best on market IMHO

Get an fx5, a 150 is a pretty large tank. I only like hob filters for smaller tanks like my 40 gallon qt tank.

not going to argue that, combo of both best way to go, looking for 10x in a HoB and 5x in a canister, HoB being mech filtration and canister bio.

Thanks for all the Replies, yea I probably should have just gone with the Aqua Clear.

My plan was to add another AC110 filter to the 150g, it already has a sump, a Filstar XP4, and another AC110. I have a 52g grow out tank that I was running 2 AC70s and a AC110. So I put the Magnum 350 on the 52g and moved the ac110 to the 150g like the original plan.

Stocking in the 150g

1 Tiger Oscar
1 Leporinus
1 Jack Dempsey
1 Silver Dollar Left over from a school of 7
3 Blood Parrots
2 Convicts (left over feeders)

Stocking in the 52,

1 juvenile Flowerhorn
1 juvenile Pleco
1 Raphael cat
2 juvenile Bichirs

I also have a 90g Running a sump and Filstar xp3

with an unknown amount of Africans. But it wasnt in the mix.

So I probably lessened the filtering in the 52, but I still think the bio load is still covered. If not I could still get an AC110 and add it back to the 52g if the consensus is that its necessary.
