I would just like to get some of your opinions on this filter, perhaps what you think about the quality, durability, value etc.
I got a well used one with my tank setup that i bought from someone on CL a few weeks ago and i liked it so i went and bought a 2nd one for my 90 gal. $40 + S&H sounds good to me!
Also the one i have is missing the attachment that keeps small fish/large debri from getting sucked in; if i call marineland when my new one comes and say that this attachment is missing from my recent purchase will they give me a new one?

I haven't had much luck with those filters. They're very loud and always seems to break, or mess up the impeller and get louder. Aqua Clear 110 all the way.

My used 75g I got on craigslist for $100 also came with a marineland emperor 400b bio-wheel power filter...its quiet for the most part and I haven't had any issues with it so far. It's definitely not the worst filter, but it aint the best filter either. So, I guess I think it is pretty decent. My 75g also came with what looks to be an AquaClear 110 that Steveo McNello prefers over the Marineland Emperor 400. I have not used it though, so I don't know if it is better or not. I thought the Marineland Emperor 400 was better and so I use it, but maybe I am wrong?

I guess I could always use both. :grinno:

I've had two 280s running on my 55g since summer with no problems. I've mostly been an AC guy myself, but decided to pick these up when Big Al's had them on sale for 20ish. My only real complaint is that when I do water changes, they stop working after I've taken out 4 or 6 inches of water out of the tank. This concerns me because there's no flow to the biowheels and it takes me a while to do water changes with the 'ol trusty bucket.

I've had a few running for a few years with no problems. I haven't used the mechanical cartridges they come with for a long time. I just put seachem matrix in the media holder and cut quilt batting to fit behind that.

I have not had the emperor 400 but have had the emperor 280. I did not like it. After two days, the bio wheel slowed down a lot even with adjusting the spray bar. The cartrdidge is damn near impossible to rewash and reuse, emperor cartrdiges arent cheap. I have 2 Ac-110 and I love them, rewash and reuse your foam cartridges, no bio wheel to worry about and in my opinion better made. I also have a penquin 200 along with an AC-70 on my 46. I do not use the marineland cartridges. GO GET AN AC-110 :D

i think emperos are the best if they sound loud just unplug and replug them and they will be quiet again trust me , they last along time, and they look great .. i have 4 emperor 400's and only 3 tanks lol, and i only use 1 , i just have extras that i bought just in case i get more tanks, i love these filters

what is seachem?

Emperor 400 is a good filter. I have some that have been running for 10 years. Only complaint I have is that the spray bar occasionally clogs up and needs to be cleaned. The strainer that is missing on your filter is available on-line for a couple of bucks. Telling Marineland that your new filter came without one is dishonest.

Here is a link to a site to buy a new strainer: http://www.petsolutions.com/storefr...emperor-filter-parts/prodEmperor400Parts.html
