Marineland Model 4 Sump Drain Hose Seal Problem

Does anybody have any of these Marineland sumps? The drain hose connects to the sump with a 90 degree elbow and rests against a rubber gasket. Mine has a slow leak on both sides and water beads up on the rubber gasket. Eventually it streams down the side of the sump. I have a string around it going into the sump to soak it up and guide it to the sump. They don't want you to use glue here so that you can take it apart and clean it.

Can I use grease or something like that to get a better seal?

Silicone grease, "tune up" grease, or dielectric grease are all fish safe and should help. Make sure there is no strain on the fitting that cocks it out of plane. How old is the pump? Is the gasket OK? Is it an actual gasket or an o-ring?

Thanks!!!

I tied up my hoses to make sure they aren't strained and pulling off. The pump and sump are brand new and I just started up my tank 5 days ago.

Both rubber gaskets are great. I can post a picture of what it is doing.

I think it is a gasket because it covers the top and bottom of the hole.

Did you get this resolved? My problem is that the seam on the drain hoses have split and are leaking. One of the hoses split as soon as I inserted it over the PCV pipe. The other one started leaking after a week of use. Marineland was quick at replacing the 1st one but I am still waiting on the second one. I did notice that the material of the replacement hose was different (gray, not white) so hopefully this solves the problem.

Hi guys,
Nice setup
I am very interested on the model 4 sump. I am getting ready to place an order for the 200 gallon starfire deep tank, stand and top. I currently have an older tidepool 2 on a 75 gallon tank and works fine for me. I was debating on the model 4 verses making my a wet/dry sump. I would love to see a video of the sump in action. I am curious about the water flow path and possible plumbing options. Do you like the Maxi-jet 5500s? are they quiet? I am debating on running 2 submerged pumps vs 1 big external.

Sorry for the hijack, I just wanted to talk about your setups.

There are sveral food safe greases out there that might help slow the leak down.

Thanks
J

I did get this resolved. I actually didn't do anything and the connections formed a slight bit of what looks like crust on the rubber flange. It now doesn't bead up with water anymore. I emailed Marineland about it and they suggested to use a bit of silicone grease just as Knowdafish suggested. Let me know if you need anything else since I have basically the exact same setup as you.

BTW, Gotfrogs, is that a Aqueon/AGA stand for you tank? I have a 210 AGA glass tank with a pine AGA stand. I had to rip a board out to get that thing in there. I just put it back in and re-nailed it in. Also, if you do have one, put some support under the bottom of the stand as mine bowed when I filled the sump with water.

I have a Marineland Monterey cabinet and hood that was built for this tank. No modifications were required for the stand.
