Very interesting read.

Crazy... I've heard of some SW fish changing, but never FW.

So, I just read that the auratus cichlids are capable of changing their sex if they are in an environment with no males...

i purchaced two juvenile(2 inches) auratus cichlids yesterday and both seem to be females. they are behaving well in my mbuna tank and are just swimming together everywhere. no biting.

Two questions:

has anyone ever had their cichlid change their sex?

is it too early to sex my auratus? or would I clearly see that I have a male at their size?

Auratus is top as they change their colors quite frequently. but dont think they can change sex.

Now I have a couple of hybrids in my tank that I cannot get a positive ID on but they have the color change of a male, the one or two spots on the anal fin like a male, but everyone says that they are females. Its just crazy so I am waiting to see what happens with both of them and see who has eggs in the mouth

I've had a couple auratus as well. Bought them both (2 females) as what looked like a tank full of females and 1 male. 3 months later, one of my females (at least I thought a female) started to show the male coloration (brown instead of white).

Also heard that Kenyi do this. Never seen them do it, but I guess its possible.
