Measuring fish length

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Aside from catching the fish, any other way to measure a fish that is between 15 and 20 inches?
Depending on its movement/location in the tank, one method I've used is to lay a tape measure in front of the tank and take a video. You can then freeze frame when you get the best view to estimate from the tape measure. Of course, this will only work reasonably well if the fish is near the front of the tank and lined up straight across. I had a flowerhorn that would comply perfectly, so I could chart growth pretty accurately without netting him.

My method is... close one eye... make my best honest guess... add 15%...
Then round up.

The best way I've found is to get a big pleco. Carefully watch the tank until the fish you're trying to measure swims next to it, make note of the relative length.

Wait for the big pleco to suck onto the side of the tank and then quickly put a measuring tape next him. Marking compared to your arm is also a viable option and your arm is less likely to get startled and swim away while you try to read the measuring tape.
