Hi guys, I was thinking of building a loach tank somewhere in the future.... and I want to mix loach species. I was thinking of mixing clown loaches, with yo-yos, green tigers and redtail botias... is this recommended?

It will depend on the specific speices of loaches. Ive currently got Clowns, Yo Yo, Striata, Chain, and Angelicus loaches together. But they are all pretty peaceful. The Tigers and the redtails are agressive and not a good idea to mix with.

although I agree with aggression, I disagree with the not good mix. It can work with a big tank, adequate cover and large numbers. Just my opinion.

Im still going to dissagree. Loaches like clowns and Yo Yo's are really not a good recommendation with much more agressive species like the Tiger, The red fin/tail or the Skunks.

Here is a great artical from a site that specializes in nothing but loach and botia species. They recommend not to house these with calmer fish such as the yo yo or the Clowns. Ive had Skunks, redfins and tigers and they are a bit more nasty acting.

I plan to have at least a 100 gallon tank for these loaches.... would it be enough?

Redtail loaches can get to 10" in length. Tiger loaches can get up to 14" in length the clowns can get up to 14". Going to be hard to keep in only 100 gallons.

Going with the assumption that your getting 4 to 5inch fish or smaller, you will get many years of them being in a 100. Combining these species you will need to have heavily branched driftwood throughout the water column all over the tank with additional caves and spots to conceal themselves along the bottom. The clowns and the yoyo's will be the less aggressive species, but with escape routes all throughout the tank and many territories throughout, the tigers won't be able to continuously harass a specimen to cause excessive stress. Aquascaping is everything when your dealing with aggressive, super elusive, streamline, escape artists like loaches. If you want normal, everyday aquascaping it won't work
