How do I stop this every time I stick my hand in the tank I am scared to death, he bites me and grabs on, he has a large tank all to himself perfect conditions but hates my guts. I really like the idea that lots of people can pet there FH’s and I have recently been trying in spite of his aweful attitude and constant biting. Any tips on making him mellow out and not bite me as much. Thanks

Every cichlid has a different personality.

Some are super friendly to their owners, others want to attack anything in sight. Seems you have one of the latter ones.

Doubt you can change him, unless he mellows with age.

ok, thought so but worth a shot to ask

There's a thread here already of someone made a contraption to clean his tank but for me I feed first and while eating im scrubbing the tank or vacuuming. Once in a while I put a parrot fish to keep him busy while I clean or mirror.

I am new to FH myself. Have had mine for 1 month. I have been the only one to deal with him since he came home. Have tried to pet him at every feeding to get him used to contact. He runs to the corner of his aquarium everytime i put my hand in the tank. Tonight my wife fed him for the first time and he settled right into the palm of her hand a let her pet him all over. My guess is the fish picks his/her human based on there own tuition about the handler. Maybe we can share our efforts together.

Evidently he prefers the company of females. Can ya blame him? lol

Not anymore. Was born and raised in Arcadia though. Still have friends there.
