Recently got this fish, I wanted one for a long time and finally got around to getting one. For me they are just the right size not too big to be a tank buster but big enough to hold its own. It love earthworms and cut shrimp, however I've noticed it takes about 8 to 10 hours to digest shrimp depending on the size of the piece and about 4 to 5 hours to digest worms. Once its stomach goes down it's out cruising again for something to eat. I have it in the 240 gallon tank with a BGK, Leichardti, Senegal Bichir and 5 SDs. it's about 6" right now but I can see its already put on some size and bulk since I got it. Any long term advice on them is welcome, its quickly becoming one of my favorites.

Nice. LSN are way underrated IMHO.

The aro and the dollars are probably very good dithers for it, if it is as comfortable as you say and as it looks - it looks good.

They don't compete well for food usually ime (but not always, Necrocanis' for one was a pig). They like the company of their kin until adulthood. You probably know the lima versus elongatus ID saga too. They are shy, timid, but have a bad spine sting. They are not fond of much current and like to float vertically head down.... I am pretty sure you know all this, Tom, and are yawning ear-to-ear by now :)

I'm pretty sure it is S. lima not S. elongatus but they look very similar. Either way I'm ok with it. It's not shy at all it will swim right up to the SD's and pull a worm right out of its mouth. It likes to take the classic vertical posture when digesting other wise its cruising the tank looking for something to eat. When it starts to swim around I know it's hungry so I just throw it a worm. I like watching how it smells it out wherever it is it doesn't take long for it to locate it. as soon as a whisker brushes against something it's gone in a flash. It finds food faster than the bichir but I suspect it also has better sensory perception to go along with the sense of smell. The SDs are pretty fast when food hits the water and it pushes its way right through them. It is a very cool fish and like I said the right size I don't have to worry about what I'm going to do with a potential 5ft monster down the road, I can house this fish for life. They are underrated I agree, but they aren't the tank busters people like, all the big cat attributes in a manageable size. I recommend them for anyone with at least a 6ft tank 300 gallons or less.

I just got one too. Mine doesn't seem to come out at all with the lights on. Once the lights go out he starts cruising the tank. I almost have to drop food in front of his face once the lights go out to make sure he eats.
