This one is being revisited for several good reasons. It expands on the adhesion of new and old, as well as exploring some new ideas. This round of testing of course raises more questions that can be explored later.

The myths:
1. New silicone will not adhere to aged silicone.
2. Silicone does not adhere to plastic.
3. Tanks left dry or outside will cause the silicone seal to dry out and decay.
4. One silicone is as good as the next.

I had on hand a case of my favorite silicone, Boss 310, for which I will be using to reseal a large tank that I have acquired. I also had two tubes of Plumbers Silicone and it turns out that both had set up without the metal seals being broken. The GE silicone has white pigment in it, however it should perform the same as the clear. There is not a distinction on GE’s spec sheet for a difference between clear and pigmented silicone.

In the video that follows, the scale used max’s out at 10kg/22lb. The purpose of the test with the scale is to verify that the silicone bonds have respectable strength. The purpose of the ‘Pull and Peel’ test is to 1. Determine if the bond between the old and new silicones will fail and 2. Determine if the old silicone will pull away from the tank (if it had degraded from being empty and in the sun).

It should be noted that I looked at several tanks before choosing one. The one I chose was the first one I looked at (the one on the top of the pile. The next two had peeling seams. They had seen commercial use and had been exposed to medications on a regular basis.

The call:

1. Again this one is BUSTED. This doesn’t mean that all old tanks & silicone are created equal. Some of us have had bad experiences with old silicone. This test just shows that new silicone will adhere to old silicone that is still in good shape.

2. For now, I am leaving this one alone. ‘Plastic’ is too generic and PVC can not really represent all plastics. The test shows that silicone will adhere very well to PVC but it is documented that it does not adhere well to several plastics including acrylic and Teflon. I have an acrylic tank held together with silicone that I will be destroying for your viewing pleasure. Of course, I’ll post the video here.

3. I have to say that this one is BUSTED, because the silicone in this tank is in incredible shape and was dry and in the sun for over two years. There are many other factors that can cause silicone to degrade, but this tank is evidence that being left dry is not one of those factors.

4. This one is also BUSTED. I was certain that the Boss 310 silicone was going to be the champion, but it was only the champion in proving that all silicones are not created equal.

If you can figure out why silicone cures in a sealed (new) tube before it's expiration date that would be a plus!!!!

Keep up the good work.

Cool experiment! Whats the reasoning behind your hypothesis on the Boss 310 silicone? The price, personal experience, ect? Just wondering.

Permatex FTW!

We're still talking about silicone, right? :nilly:

Actually there are much more to come. When I get bored with it, I'll link them together (maybe for the articles section).

It didn't have a date on the crimp like toothpaste, but I'm going to guess that they didn't rotate their stock for a few years. We had two tubes and both were bad (my brother bought them about three months ago).

Btw, keep feeding me ideas like the pvc in the seam; unemployment gets boring.

It was because it was the best thing I have found for sealing PVC pipe threads and holding at 50 psi. GE silicone (and many others) won't do it because it is too soft.

Where one fails, the other shines.

My acrylic tank that was glued together with silicone has gone AWOL. Either I gave it away (doubt it) or my brother threw it away (most likely). It was so flimsy that I was sure it was going to fall apart on its own. And I really wanted to go ninja on it too.
