Hello my Gar was injured a few weeks back, Ive been caring for him in hopes he would recover. Unfortunately Hes taken a turn for the worse and I might have to put him down. I was going to buy some clove oil to have on hand In case He continues to worsen. I cant find anything on how clove oil actually puts them down. Being a Gar he can surface and breath air. I just wanted to make sure that wouldn't interfere with the process.

- thanks

I'm sorry you are in this position. I respect the decision you are making.

The gar will still absorb the clove bud oil. It may take a little more time for it to fall asleep, but it will with enough time and enough clove bud oil. At this point you can add alcohol (vodka) as many advise. Once it falls completely asleep from the clove bud oil, it will lose its ability to breathe at the surface and will eventually drown. The use of alcohol after anesthesia is optional, but likely a faster method.

PatrickMW36 PatrickMW36 sorry for your loss. And I hope you don't mind me jumping in on your thread.

Dieselhybrid Dieselhybrid if I could ask. I know the clove oil method.
But what is the vodka for? What's the benefit of adding the alcohol? I assume it adds to the process in some way.
I've looked it up but the information is somewhat scattered and not very useful. I'm more interested in the actual effect on the fishes systems and a more in depth explanation. If it's a complicated answer, if you could just point me the right direction with a link or something, it would be okay. Thanks

Hey BIG-G BIG-G ! The use of vodka or alcohol brings a quicker dispatch. I have found with clove bud oil it can take a much longer time to complete the task. For me the thought is clove bud oil to to put them comfortably to sleep, and then alcohol once they are unconscious to finish the deed. Certain dosages of Clove bud oil seem to just hold them in a deep slumber, it requires a heavier dosage IME to put them completely out with Clove oil alone. Regular clove oil will work as well as clove bud oil.

As far as the biological mechanism that the ethyl alcohol causes the acute death I am uncertain, but I know it works quickly. I'm sure if performed on a conscious fish it would be a stressful and painful ordeal for them. Once the fish is unconscious I think you could use many chemicals to cause an acute dispatch. Vodka for some unknown reason seems to the the choice of most hobbyists. Or many just continuously add more clove oil.
