I wouldn't worry about it. You want the overflow to flow as much as possible to keep your options of larger pumps open.

Shorter return = lower head pressure = less stress on the pump = better flow.

Larger overflows = Well, higher overflow rates.

But turnover rate = pump gph + overflow size.

In other words ... Just Do It ;).

no thats my grandpas invention
he has made many many tanks like that.
i plan to make some tanks with that same filter type.
plus i plan to take that idea and do my own twist to it on one of my tanks soon.

one of those side filters with a good sand bed and lots of plants would make a great nitrate filter....
