I have a Needle Nose Gar, he's about 9" in length. He looks really heathy compared to others I've seen. The question I have is about his feeding. I normally get him guppies and rosies to eat, but I'm curious about other things to feed it. I don't know what would be good and what wouldn't. Like crickets or local stream minnows...etc...

I know it's not a true gar. It's a "Silver Needlefish" (Xenentodon cancila). I was simply asking for advise on the topic...

Gar or not...makes no difference to the question asked. I have always kept one of these(strange as it may sound) with one of my breeding pairs of Dempsey's and over time I've gotten them trained to eat a wide variety of things. Switching from feeders I start with frozen krill. I get some of the wooden bbq skewers, stick a decent sized chunk of the krill on the end, then I use it to splash the krill around on the surface and mimic swimming. They usually take the "bait" after a bit! Then over time they'll learn to hit anything that splashes on the surface or floats through the tank. Bloodwarms, beefheart, krill, freeze-dried, even pellets, etc.

Thanx Bkt, much appriciated. I'll start doing the skewer thing tomorrow.

took mine a few monthes... keeping it with larger docile fish that readily eat pellets helped alot in pellet training mine. i kept mine for while with a immature oscar who taught him to take pellets within a week of being added.

Mine is housed with my male and female balloon green terrors. I think she may be eating the krill that floats at the top because she is still plump and not getting skinny. fingers crossed
