Hi everyone,

A week ago today I purchased 7 sub adult (3-3.5") tapajos. I acclimated them for at least an hour through drip acclimation. The tank is a 75g that has been setup for a while but removed all the plants and driftwood (sold that stuff to buy new stuff) got new low tech plants and new wood for the scape. Filter is well established eheim pro 3 2075 with lots of bio media which supported a ton of fish right before these guys come to me.

I keep the temp at 81, lighting on for 9 hours a day, lots of hiding spots, and pool filter sand substrate. I have been feeding a mix of foods which they seem to love and eat at least 2 times a day. their color has much improved since i got them and seems to continue to improve.

My main concern is that they don't seem active during the lighting period. I run a single 48" finnex planted plus that at least 35" above the substrate. it doesn't seem to be very bright at all but it seems to bother them. when lights go out they move around a lot more and tend to get a little more feisty.

From what I can tell their behavior in very normal in terms of digging creators, defending their spots, socializing and such. much of this behavior happens when the main tank light if off though. I want to know how I can make them more active during the day. They seem to bunker down during the lighting period which i don't like for obvious reasons. Anything I can do? Will they get used to it over time? Any suggestions ill be super helpful.

I would give them more time, and if that doesn't improve then maybe try shading off an area. Possibly you may have to change lighting.

Ive been keeping Tapajos since last August. I bought them a little bigger than fry, and they have grown to the size you described. I think they are more active after dark at this age. I say that because mine were extremely active up until a little over a month ago. I have lots of cover and pretty mild LED lighting. In other words, its probably just a phase.

One thing I will advise is to check their heads for pitting and their lateral lines for signs of erosion, as this is a sign of a disease that might also effect their behaviors.
I made a post asking for help, you can see it here:

I have a 90 SA cichlid tank, with 36 inch LED light so the sides stay dimmer, throws less heat too.your tank temp.might be rising above 81 with your light.i would shoot for 78.i would try a school fish, they might feel more at ease.lemon tetras would look great.

Floating plants and a school of bigger than snack sized tetras should bring them out.
Over head cover does a lot to settle in skittish fish.

Because of the tank being a 75g I didn't want to put other fish die to bio waste. Also like the idea of keeping a single species.

Is the dither fish a must have or will they eventually come out with more time? Or could I remove the dither fish later on?
