Is money an object? How many gallons are you planning for? I'll assume a fine sand substrate? And what's the overall plan for the tank? I'm assuming that breeding is certainly on your mind given the clarification for sexing the rays, but do you also plan to introduce other life into the tank?

I am hoping for a system around 350-400 gallons (this includes the 60 gallon sump I will be filling with K1)
I am undecided as to whether use sand or bare bottom. I currently have a beautiful bare bottom for my discus tank and have grown to really enjoy that look but perhaps sand so the Rays feel more comfortable
If I do tank mates it would only be full grown discus (6 inch plus)

Ok that's an excellent size for 3 rays. Theoretically a bare substrate or sand would work just fine although these guys obviously do like the bury themselves in sand and I personally enjoy the look considerably more than a bare bottom, but to each his own. The only downside is that with a bare bottom, you obviously will see every piece of debris in that tank. Either way, with the size, filtration, and population you've mentioned; you won't have any issues at all either way.

I personally would make the decision based on you aesthetic preference. If you think that in the future you may want to decorate a bit, maybe even try your hand at some life plants, then obviously sandy gives you a ton of options for the future.
